All You Need to Know About Self-Publishing

Whether it’s your first walk or you’re on your fifth marathon in the publishing world, there are always mountains of questions you could have. Check out our frequently asked questions below.

Is it better to find a traditional publisher or self-publish?

The publishing industry has changed leaps and bounds over the last 20 years with the help of the internet. Now authors can easily push their own content to their audiences. Traditional publishing has its place, but self-publishing gives you, the author, more power and more money in your pocket from your book sales.

Traditional publishing houses finance the production of a book. In most cases, they will also manage the marketing as well, although this is a little less common now for new authors.

You’ll usually need an agent to work with a publisher. A publisher will take a percentage of books sales and pay you a royalty.  This will mean less profit in your pocket.

Self-publishing can be lucrative, but it will require a lot of dedication and work. As a self-publisher, you will project-manage your marketing, production and editing. This can be a daunting task for many, but that is where we come in to help. We will help you with the process of moving your book from manuscript to publication for a fee, and you get to keep 100% of your profits from books sales.

Is JTPS a vanity publisher?

No, we are not a vanity publisher. A vanity publisher assumes no risk during the publishing process but will usually ask for exorbitant fees that do not go toward the actual production of your book.  As a self-publisher, you have no contracts to worry about such as with a vanity publisher or a traditional publisher. JTPS is a service provider. We provide key services that independent authors will need to self publish their book.

Do I need an agent to self-publish?

A book agent’s purpose is to get you in front of publishing houses to secure a publishing contract. They can also be useful for securing movie rights and top-notch editors. An agent will have a network of resources that is helpful to an author. However, most agents will not advocate for self-publishing. Their purpose is to represent you in the traditional publishing space.  You will pay an agent a percentage of sales to represent you.

You won’t need an agent to self-publish. You are your own agent as a self-publisher. Unless you are seeking to get a movie deal or seeking to transition into traditional publishing, an agent for self-publishing may not add a lot of value to your endeavor.

What book formats do you produce?

We are able to produce your book in digital, paperback and hardcover through a handful of print-on-demand services. These can be distributed across multiple platforms.

What if I’m having trouble with my story?

No matter the stage you are in your writing process, we can help you. We will evaluate your plot structure and the characters you are using and help you develop a plot arc that will keep your readers turning pages.

How long does it take to self-publish a book?

There is no specific time frame it takes to publish your book. Because there are a lot of factors that go into producing a finish book of great quality, the timeline can take several months. It will depend on the stage you are in with your work.

If you have already done the editing work on your manuscript, the rest is simply the layout and production of your book which can take a couple of weeks.

If you have an unpolished manuscript that needs developmental editing  and rewriting, the process will be much longer.

Why should I work with JT Print and Publishing Services?

At JTPS, we take pride in what we do. It is our desire to ensure that your work is polished and pristine.
